Gateway to Old Oak: Willesden Junction Bridge

Working with OPDC, we are excited to invite artists to help transform one of Old Oak’s key gateways into a vibrant and welcoming public route.

Willesden Junction Bridge provides a key connection from Harlesden Town Centre and Willesden Junction Station, southwards towards the Old Oak Lane Conservation Area and canal, as well as marking a key gateway into the future new neighbourhood of Old Oak. The bridge is currently heavily covered with graffiti tags and makes for an unpleasant pedestrian experience due to the nature of the high parapets, which block long views out across the railway lines.

Working with a local artist, this commission will transform this route into a welcoming and inviting entrance to Old Oak, using art as a tool for wayfinding and cultural identity. As a key pedestrian route from the station, it's important that this route feels safe and welcoming to use for all.

Submissions should demonstrate a balance between creativity and practicality, considering durability, sustainability, and ensure that it is easily maintained.

The selected artist or team will be expected to work closely and engage with the local community and draw influence from local area, to ensure the design is inclusive and representative of Old Oak and Park Royal.
